Sheikh Saud Meets With the Canadian Consul General in Dubai
On March 16, 2014, His Highness Sheikh Saud Bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, in the company of H.E. Ross Miller, Consul General of Canada to Dubai, handed over the proceeds from the 5th annual Terry Fox Run to a U.A.E. University Faculty of Medicine delegation. H.E. Ross Miller thanked Sheikh Saud for his support and charitable giving by hosting and supporting the Terry Fox Run five years in a row.
Long a supporter of the Terry Fox Race and its mission, Sheikh Saud has sponsored the annual race since 2010. Sheikh Saud and the people of Ras Al Khaimah work together to make the all-volunteer a success each year. This year’s race took place on February 28, 2014 and broke all earlier records in terms of donations and number of participants.
The Terry Fox Race is a charitable event that raises funds for cancer research. The race is named after the inspirational Canadian athlete and cancer victim, Terry Fox, who died of the disease in 1981. The Terry Fox Foundation was created to carry on the work that Terry started. His Marathon of Hope, the last run of his life, raised over $22 million for cancer research. The Terry Fox Foundation has raised over $600 million dollars to date through grassroots efforts just like the Terry Fox Race held in Ras Al Khaimah. Over 9,000 Terry Fox Run events are held each year throughout the world. In addition to the Terry Fox Race, the Foundation raises funds through school programs, such as the National School Run Day, direct donations, online fundraisers and various local events. Currently, over 1,139 research projects are being conducted and funded by the Terry Fox Foundation.
H.E. Ross Miller was named Canada’s Consul General in Dubai on October 15, 2012 and has played an active role in U.A.E. events. He has over 32 years of diplomatic experience. After earning an M.B.A. from York University in Toronto in 1977, Consul General Miller joined the Trade Commissioner Service in the Department of Industry, Trade and Commerce. His first diplomatic appointment was as Hamburg vice consul. In 1982, he was appointed the first secretary of economy in Mexico City. Miller returned to Ottawa in 1985 and served in various trade policy roles before returning to diplomatic work as commercial-economic counselor in Prague in 1990. Miller served as Canadian exchange officer and economic counselor in German from 1994 to 1999 when he returned to Ottawa as the European Union Division deputy director. From 2002 until his appointment as Canada’s Consul General in Dubai, he served as commercial-economic counselor at The Hague, Jakarta and Argentina.
A number of senior officials and event organizers joined Sheikh Saud and H.E. Ross Miller to witness the hand over of funds the over Dh149,143.50 raised. Sheikh Saud and H.E. Ross Miller expressed an ongoing commitment to promote scientific research to improve the lives and health of humanity.

Понад 20 людей загинули в ході штурму демонстрантами сталеливарного заводу у в'єтнамській провінції Хатінь, повідомляє в четвер, 15 травня, Reuters.
Кілька сотень протестувальників намагалися штурмувати сталеливарний завод Formosa Plastics Group, що належить тайванській корпорації. Демонстранти помилково вважали його китайським підприємством. Серед загиблих виявилися п'ять в'єтнамських робітників і ще 16 чоловік, імовірно китайців. Близько сотні постраждалих були відправлені до лікарні - багато з них громадяни КНР.
